Insulating attic

Looking to insulate the attic in prep for summer. Need advice- does the spray stuff professionally done work well? It gets so damn hot upstairs and I know the insulation isn’t adequate. It’s a big job or I’d do it myself. Figure I’ll get a better rate now then later- what say you?

When you say “spray” do you mean foam or just blown-in insulation?
It’s very difficult to justify spray foam IMO. R-38 blown in has worked very well for me and is significantly cheaper.

If adding traditional insulation, you also may want looking into sealing attic leaks LINK, to the conditioned area below, prior to adding insulation - that would not apply to spray foam insulation.
Though I would likely go with spray foam insulation with new house build/construction, I would not retro-fit to an existing home. Sealing + supplemental fiberglass/celluose insulation would provide dramatic improvement at a much lower price point.
