I would suggest that. The way Divinity 2s battle works you have to burn through that enemies armor type before you can hurt them. Some will have only physical or magical, but later on most enemies will have both (unless something has changed since I last played, but I played the definitive edition, so should still be that way).
So it's easier to burn through one type of armor than both. At least I found it more effective. You can do a ranged archer type for physical damage though, doesn't have to be melee only. There are also some physical damage spells too.
And you don't have to be Fane, I would just keep him in your party because he has a hunch of unique insights into the world and provides a bunch of backstory as you go on.
