I'm convinced this all started when we gave women the microwave oven. It's been all downhill since.

Nope. You are way, way too recent.
It started when wood burning heating for cooking kept the men folk busy gathering fuel (wood, buffalo chips, etc.) after they tended the livestock as women ran the gardens, cloth weaving, clothes making.
Too much time ended up being wasted on things that weren't essential to life and the family survival. The male-female partnerships got forgotten.
