It was solid but I’m lost as hell
So are the scientist facility and the other case with the girl connected? Who the hell is the girl in the photos?

That’s what it seems to imply. With the woman’s tongue being found at the facility (they mentioned the grooves in the tongue are from wetting fishing line with their tongue, a common local practice I’m assuming).
The girl in the photos is the young local Native woman who was stabbed 30+ times and had her tongue cut out that Navarro found (and the case apparently caused her to spiral). It sounds like Jodie Foster’s character has interest in the cold case.

Holding out hope that Travis is Rust’s dead dad from Alaska.
The reintroduction of the carcosa spiral has me intrigued. Feel like the killer is ultimately going to be the dad with the mail order wife or Qaavik who is banging the police trooper.

I mean, they clearly implied this....but were you seriously expecting an answer to this question in episode 1. It's pretty clear the connection between the cold case and the science facility is one of the main plot pieces.
