Nah. If .30-06 recoil is bothering you, you should go further down than that for an appreciable difference. You might just try some reduced recoil ammo for your ought 6 first. I think the are 125gr loads at moderate speeds. Should be drastically less recoil and still plenty horsepower for deer. You might also consider a muzzle brake. Much cheaper than a new rifle and again, drastic recoil reduction. You'll need to buy some of those good electronic earplugs to hunt with, which I recommend regardless. They can be had on sale for less than $100.
For an older man who I presume can shoot well, a .243 or even .223 is a great option with the right ammo and will be a major step down in recoil. When I get old and tired of recoil, I'll be doing all my big game hunting near and far with an AR15.
