This is such a stupid take. He had some success at ULL and some LSU fans wanted him at LSU

Success at the sunbelt is completely different than having a successful sec program. The lsu fans that wanted him were UL* homers. He will get fired next year and his time at Florida has been a disaster. It’s fairly obvious. They fired Mullen and were a game away from the Playoffs. Now look at them

I mean you’re being pretty disingenuous with this comment. Mullen’s last year was a disaster and players were tuning the coach out. Napier hasn’t worked out so far but he was a hot name coming out of that cycle. Dude interviewed the previous year with Auburn and South Carolina. So it’s not like he was just some random schmuck.

Hindsight is 20/20. Napier was a hot coach coming out of ULL. Hiring any head coach save a handful is a crap shoot. Napier hasn't been able to adjust to being a college football head coach on the biggest stage. There's no shame in that.

Mullen stopped coaching / caring / following rules after the 2018 season.

McElwain left him a decent roster and he found every possible way to piss it away in 2019. Took a better team to Jax and absolutely shite the bed.

In 2020 he got lucky with UGA suffering about eleventy billion injuries so he won in Jax and won the East. But starting with the shoe toss game, he then went 5-9 and got fired and I've never seen a program nosedive like UF did after that LSU game. Mullen completely stopped doing his job.

Dan Mullen should have been fired at the end of 2020. He embarrassed the school every week of that season. Got UF on probation and got a show cause order from the NCAA.

He was at the end of his contract and his buyout was pretty close to zero. There weren't many coaching moves that year. Kiffin was brand new at Ole Miss and could have been brought over for a steal, as no buyout would have been paid to Mullen. Instead Stricklin gave Mullen a huge raise, a new contract, an unmitigated buyout - and gave up every bit of leverage he had with Mullen.

He was the representative of the school in those negotiations and failed to do his job, intentionally. That is beyond an offense worthy of termination. He could have forced Mullen to either walk away with exactly nothing in his pocket, or take a huge pay cut if he wanted to remain the coach at UF. That extra money could have been used to bring in a new DC and get rid of Todd Grantham. Or, again, it could have been used to make getting a new coach and staff far easier.

But Stricklin committed fraud against his employer, waited a year, it cost the school tens of millions in buyouts, and coaching salaries were through the roof because there were so many moves the next year. Oh and he then agreed to fund Napier's staff of eleventy billion people.

The administrative negligence at UF is criminal, and if the university president had any balls at all he would direct an investigation to look into all of this. Stricklin, Mullen, and Mullen's agent conspired to defraud the school. All of this came on the heels of McElwain making up death threats and then obstructing a law enforcement investigation, and the school still agreed to give him like $2M in buyout money. They should have been suing him.

UF's administration is a bag of arse. Like many schools, they treat the fans and boosters as if they are limitless, bottomless ATMs. Eventually the fans will walk away and there's going to be an unholy mess.

I'm not here to defend the Napier hire but you are falsely pointing to Florida as unfairly firing Mullen. He refused to make meaningful changes to his staff and it was beyond obvious he had no interest in recruiting in the current landscape of college football. Why do you think he's still a TV talking head two year later?

Florida fricked up hiring the wrong guy. They were absolutely not wrong to part ways with Mullen.

Mullen deserved to be canned after 2021. He stopped giving a shite after that 2020 SEC title game and never prioritized recruiting. He had one close game vs Bama in 2021 but things unraveled after that.
