I don't think that was the reason. I think the reason is that progressives truly believe that people who have grown up being influenced by bad behaviors can have good behaviors rub off on them just by being closer to people who have grown up being influenced by good behaviors. What we see more often than not is the reverse. Progressives can't allow themselves to believe they could be wrong so they try to double-down on their philosophies when those philosophies fail. We've seen this behavior time and again and everytime failure becomes inevitable they simply try to do more of it while saying "it will work this time."
