We stayed in Ortisei- Val Gardena and hiked the high mountain meadow above the town. Unbelievable. Small towns that are ski towns in the winter.
You get the Italian and the Austrian vibe and the towns are served by a bus system.
Easy to get to from Verona and Lake Garda on the road to the Brenner Pass. I think it took us about 2 hours from Sirmione on Lake Garda.
