Why do so many still wonder whether grabbing players from the portal works? You can look over the landscape of CFB and oftentimes some of the best players on a team came from the portal. Hell, JD5 came from the portal. FSU grabbed a lot of portal players and it worked for them. 3 of the 4 Heisman candidates this year were portal players.

Put those 3 or 4 up against the total number of players taken in the portal. For every Jayden Daniels there’s a JT Daniels who bombed somewhere or a TJ Finley and Max Johnson who had to transfer again because they couldn’t cut it in the SEC.

There are only a small number impact portal players every season, and some of the ones who look like they have the pedigree coming in will be the very ones who don’t work out. Remember, everyone assumed a 2 year P5 starter in Chesnut and an All-PAC12 LB in Speights would be strong plug and play starters here. Not just us- many national analysts looking at LSU’s defense in the preseason were saying the same things.

It is hard to recruit the portal when you don’t have any roster spots! Not that many players leaving!

A huge part of successful coaching is roster management. Recruiting success is dictated by whether you fill your team’s needs, not the ranking. LSU has no choice but to get someone-especially in the interior DLine. This year, thus far, there are no Dline signed to use as a bandaid for next year. It’s really hard to win games when you have no interior DLine. There is a strong possibility that 2 of 4 of our already weak DLine players will go into the draft, and maybe a third. Not only do we not have enough DLine players to start, we don’t have reserves or
even bodies to practice. That translates into linebackers getting blocked and Dbacks having to maintain coverage entirely too long.

In short, with poor roster management, your defense will suck- and your coaching career will be short.

Maybe, BK could utilize some of his $10 mil for those necessary bandaids.

If yall ain’t seen by now the best way to spend money is on edge rushers and qbs. Otherwise you are pissing money away in the portal.

Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves.

That’s why Swann was acquired.
Zavion was easy because it was a mutual interest.

The only beef I have with transfer portal is we didn’t attack Moore from UTSA with more veracity.

This is certainly true in the DB room. We have several young players that got some playing time that should be much better with just the experience

I don't think Toviano is a CB.

If there's a position that we need help from the portal in, it's CB.

RBs are another because you can get good value without spending big. Diggs is a great example of this.

The portal is also a decent way to build some depth behind guys you already trust. The bigger issue is finding plug and play starters from outside the SEC who can handle this level immediately.

I wasn’t talking about value buys though. I’m talking about taking risk with bags on guys at these positions.

Walter Nolan was not worth is asking price. It’s a flash buy for ole miss but he hasn’t warranted his value.

This is totally untrue and its the reason why LSU is not going after a bunch of portal DTs

Usually it gets much better right after ESD and the bowl games. Maybe after the bowl and NSD in February, we can go back to having discussions like normal adults.

All the flaming, trolling, alters and whiney bullshite really puts me off.

Some people are paid to KNOW- and not to ASSUME.
So, ASSUMING you are correct, then we still have only 4 Dline- who were not good against the run or pass last year. Is this what you wish to rely on?
And, BTW, both are STILL considering their draft status and both have projections as high as the 2nd round.

But, what if you are not correct?

4 for 2 positions which is what most teams have not counting Lee and the freshmen
then you have Jones and Shand who can slide inside in situations

Also the portal isn't over

Are we having an issue trying to recruit the top dogs out of the portal, or are we not trying to get these guys?

It is starting to look like we are not pursuing a lot of them due to roster space. If someone comes in someone has to go. There will probably be a few more to go in the next few weeks.

Remember to we are still trying to get a couple big fish in Feb.
