quote:who did we pay for last year? LSU brought in the #2 portal player, 3 of the top 50 portal players, 5 of the top 100 portal players, and 8 of the top 118 portal players. We were the #2 team in the portal last year.
OM paying for proven players. A&M was paying for hopefuls
The top 5 in portal rankings last year were
1. Colorado
2. LSU
3. Ole Miss
4. USC
5. Auburn
Of those top 5, LSU had the highest average per player ranking.
To round out the top 10
6. FSU
7. Miami
8. Oklahoma
9. Oregon
10. UCLA
FSU played 2 ranked teams all year. LSU and Louisville
Oklahoma played 3 ranked teams, but two were SMU (Go5) and Oklahoma St who beat Oklahoma.
Oregon played 2 ranked teams. An 8-4 Oregon St, and Washington, who they lost to twice.
Simply speaking, the transfer portal had a negligible impact for most of the top ten, and if you pay attention to CFB outside of LSU and the SEC, you know that outside of Colorado, just about every team that did improve it was more because of a more experienced group or better coaching hires. LSU's offensive improvement had almost nothing to do with the 2023 transfer portal
