I was as well and do not remember “too many bowls” being a common complaint until the number exploded in the 2000s. There were 15 bowls in 1980 20 in 2000 and 35 by 2010

In any event, past complaints if they existed do not invalidate new ones.
Originally I responded to someone who said bowl games were great before there were opt outs. I mentioned that many have complained about too many Bowles for decades...hence they were all so great.

I wasn't trying to I validate complaints that there are too many bowl games these days, because there are. In fact, there is nothing compelling about any of the bowls today, nor would there have been for any bowl played about this time of the year decades ago.

And I was quibbling with your use of decades. I don’t think there were many complaints about too many bowls in the late 90s/early 2000s. I mean there’s always someone, I’m sure there was some geezer that complained when they expanded from 4 to 5

But it did mean something even in the 90s. When LSU made the Poulan Weedeater Independence bowl in DiNardo’s first season people were genuinely excited. We made it again 2 years later against Notre Dame, both teams were ranked. Obviously the situation for LSU is very different now but would other schools be excited making a bowl after not for several years?

The other thing I know some have mentioned is the matchups. It’s always this bowl is SEC B1G or SEC ACC yawn
