I think what you’re seeing is the younger workers take days off as they earn them. The older employees stockpile them in case of emergency then end up having to burn them later in the year.

As part of that older age group, I know I’m gonna take off about 10 days in the month of January every year to hunt. I’m also gonna take off a week and a half every June for a family vacation.

That’s half of my days off for the year. The other half I hold onto in case of some sort of an emergency. I’m also on salary and any OT I work goes into comp time so I can easily build 100 hrs of that a year

I qualify for 240 hours of PTO each year. Since we only have six employees, I usually just use around 80 hours per year and get an extra check for unused time that I accrued.
