this new Vatican directive offers blessings on “irregular” relationships and thus shifts the focus from the sinful individual to the sin itself.

Blessing people isn’t the same as blessing their sins.

this new Vatican proclamation sows confusion

I don’t think it’s confusing at all.

and unnecessarily creates scandal since priests already have the discretion to issue pastoral blessings on sinful individuals.

Every single individual is sinful so I guess no one should ever receive a blessing.

Despite the claims to the contrary, this directive goes further than that.

Can a blessing be bestowed upon workers who willfully work in an abortion clinic?

Again, specifically blessing couples engaged in “irregular” relationship — i.e. relationships that intrinsically are opposed to Catholic teachings — unnecessarily sows confusion and thus seeds scandal among the faithful.

As Cardinal Gerhard Müller — who previously headed the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith — has indicated in a lengthy rebuttal, the blessing of couples in scandalous relationships ipso facto opens itself to an interpretation that the blessing bestows some level of approval on such a relationship:

quote:

….Blessing a reality that is contrary to creation is not only impossible, it is blasphemy. God cannot send his grace upon a relationship that is directly opposed to him and cannot be ordered toward him. …if this blessing were given, its only effect would be to confuse the people who receive it or who attend it. They would think that God has blessed what he cannot bless. This ‘pastoral’ blessing would be neither pastoral nor a blessing. It is true that Cardinal Fernandez, in later statements to Infovaticana, said that it is not the union that is blessed, but the couple. However, this is emptying a word of its meaning, since what defines a couple as couple is precisely their being a union….

This new Vatican directive will necessarily lead to ecclesiastical abuses by progressive forces in the church that seek to fundamentally change the core tenets of the church regarding human sexuality.
