the only time I've ever heard these things referenced is by people trying to deny the Holocaust or the severity of the Holocaust.
As of the overall kill count, it was pretty big news when they replaced the '4.1 million' plaque at Auschwitz and changed it to 1 million. I don't see how you'd have missed that one.

I’m 38 and I’ve gone down some rabbit holes and haven’t heard about this. I also haven’t seen the number being reduced. Can you link it?
