Ethan Hawke was a City College professor, so not really surprising that he would be pretty useless given the situation. He knows he's useless. The daughter was definitely into him, though, otherwise she wouldn't have asked him if he fricked his students. Did you catch the part where it was implied that his wife was a white woman?
