Sure he can. Just win. People were longing for Saban when he left…until Les went 30-5 in the next 3 season. Most LSU fans were fully behind Les…until he started losing annually to the former HC.

He hasn’t been hamstrung at all. He’s had unfettered access to the transfer port from the moment he arrived at LSU. He signed two top 75 HS players in his first class. This is almost 100% HIS team. Only one player remains from Wade’s final team. It wasn’t a situation like what Johnny Jones walked into where he inherited one good player (JOBIII) and only had access to JUCOs, HS recruiting, and the LSU band to fill in the pieces. Yet Jones was able to take that group of misfits toys and win 9 games in the SEC. 19 overall.

LSU chose to fire Wade. They weren’t mandated to do so by the NCAA. Now, whether or not it was necessary to fire Wade when the did will always be up for debate (though given the fact Wade is coaching at another D1 school and a guy like Bill Self, whose program was also under investigation and the only “penalty” he received was a lifetime contract it seem less likely the firing was necessary)

Wade wasn’t doing anything any other major conf HC wasn’t doing. He just had the misfortune of talking to the worst person at the worst time in CBB history. NEVER before had college basketball recruiting been investigated by the DOJ. Thus, NO coach had ANY reason whatsoever to suspect one the dozens of “runners” they talk to a year may be recording conversations for the FBI. And given the fact the investigation fell woefully short of the stated promise to “totally change” CBB recruiting, I suspect you will never see such an investigation again. Ultimately, it was a colossal waste of resources relative to the impact it caused.

Again though, McMahon has the power to make it all go away by winning. But when the former coach’s program is beating higher level opponents than themselves by 20 while the current HC’s program is losing and struggling to beat teams on the level of McNeese, the comparisons will continue
