I’m 40 with no previous back injuries or current pain. I am in pretty good shape. Lift 3-4 days/week (PPSA)and run a few days a week usually at least one 10 mile run per week. Just the exercise and chasing around 2 toddlers wears on me and I just want something to give me some lower back relief when I’m just laying in bed before I go to sleep.

i had i think a similar nagging pain type in my low back in my early crossfit days. turns out it was that my glutes/hamstrings/piriformis were tight and "angry" from the xfit intensity. i learned lacrosse ball self-deep tissue massage and it solved that after a few months
now similar back tightness/soreness is usually loosened with floor sitting which stretches the back. i hope you find some relief

Go see a physical therapist. If you’re in good shape overall your back shouldn’t be hurting. Something is off that can likely be corrected by someone who knows what to look for.
