This fits into the "no good deed goes unpunished" category. There was this single mom that worked at the company where I was, she didn't make a lot of money, I had heard that she broke down and cried at her desk one day out of despair. It was the first week of December, I knew she had 2 kids that weren't going to get much for Christmas, so I got a $1000 money order and sent it from her "Secret Santa". What could go wrong?

Unbeknownst to me, she had a BF, not just any BF, but a particularly idiotic BF with a violent streak. He stops into see her the day she got the money order, she's over the moon excited, he thinks she has a sugar daddy and he beats her up. I see her at work the next day and in spite of the sunglasses and makeup, it's obvious she had been beaten. I ask her what happened, she tells me the story about the mystery money and the BF, of course she won't call the police and have him arrested.

The next day she comes into my office, unusual because she not in my department, closes the door, she says she figured out where the money came from, she knew it had to be me. Before I could figure out what to say, she said she needs me to call be BF and explain that I'm just a nice guy and not her sugar daddy. So, I went from feeling great about being kind, to feeling like I had caused her to get beaten up, to feeling like a sap in an uncomfortable situation who should have minded his own business.

Yes, I called the BF, I don't think he believed me anyway.
