I went to a legislative update lunch a month ago where a couple of Ds and Rs talked about current events at the state level. One of them went on this crazy rant about getting cell phones out of schools. I wanted to dismiss him at first, but he claimed to have all this good data about mental illness issues for teens going through the roof with the introduction of smartphones.
It’s less the phones (which are just the vehicle) and more the constant exposure to social media. They’re not wrong on the constant exposure has created an issue that is equivalent to addiction.

What smartphones did was make the Internet (and thus, social media) portable, and a 24 hour constant. You’re no longer limited to a few hours of Internet per day on your PC. The smartphone crackberried social media for the masses.

ETA: if I’m ever given a vote as a parent on banning smart phones and/or iPads from k-12 school campuses I will absolutely vote yes
