Before buying a chef's knife I would figure out which style she likes better. Lots of people live Japanese style chef's knives but I hate them, I much prefer the handle and balance of a Western chef's knife.

More robust knives defintely have a place in the kitchen, but chopping vegetables with a Japanese makes it so much easier/more enjoyable and result in a more consistent product.
