second gen (05-15)supposedly has frame issues. If one of these is considered make sure the frame is inspected. People claim the second gen had the best engine, the 4.0. The first gen 3.4 V6 was a decent engine as well. A lot of people complained about the lack of power and weird shifting with the 3rd gens (16-23). I would not recommend a 4WD, but looking into a prerunner. The prerunner has almost everything the 4WD has except the front diff and transfer case that s 4wd has. The 4 banger is fine if it is a 2wd single cab, other than that it id very underpowered. Tell him/her to read the tacoma forum.

Yes, gear hunting as they call it. That is def a thing, but more of an annoyance than an issue to me. I've driven my son's truck a few times and it wasn't something I just absolutely couldn't stand. They way I looked at deciding on engine, etc., is that it is for a 16 year old and I just needed something safe and reliable to get him to a from school. He is damn lucky I got him what I got him and could've gotten nothing at all or any POS I could get for super cheap.
