this has been my only conclusion also, but I cannot imagine the scenario behind that.
to me it was all LBJ wanting to be POTUS and this was his only route to it - was going to be replaced as VP in next election.
But how he got the 3 letter agencies to cooperate had always been a mystery to me (my mind has been changed on that topic after witnessing what they did to Trump in the past decade.)
I still think it was a mob-related hit, but am certainly willing to be pursuaded that the FEDs were involved somehow - if only to not stop the whole thing before it could be executed.

Much truth to that.
Seems JFK's daddy got the mob vote to put him over the top and beat Nixon. Later, JFK got his brother Bobby as AG, to go after the mob. He double crossed them.
