I've enjoyed every AirBnB I've ever stayed at. All have been clean, exactly as they appeared online, and have never had an issue with owners.
I've stayed at AirBnBs in like 20 different cities and several different countries.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I still prefer a house/cabin to myself in a neighborhood or the mountains than a hotel.

You're lucky. I had one where the owners decided to put in a new smart lock that they had no experience with which ended up in locking me out of the unit when I got back at 1 a.m. because they issued a one day code that expired at midnight instead of a multi-day code. Needless to say I could not get them at that hour and had to stay in a hotel. That was one of my very last AirBNB stays.
