I find it interesting that people get freaked out over an obscure ,rare disease such as CJD.Deaths estimated to be about 350 a year in US.

On the other hand in 2022 699,659 people died from cardiac disease.607,790 people died of cancer. Both of which are caused,in large part,by the Standard American Diet.

Preserved meat(ham, sausage, bacon, etc) are a known cancer risk as are grilled and smoked meats(steaks, burgers). Then there are highly processed foods, fast foods and such which are a mainstay of the American diet.

But there are those that won’t eat deer and are horrified at the idea of eating squirrel heads(my favorite part,BTW) from the speculative risk of catching CJD,which has never been proven and is very rare.

I have a cousin that died last year from it,Drs said it was spontaneous which I have no idea how that is determined vs.acquired.
It’s a bad way to die but personally I’d rather die from that or Alzheimers than ALS or terminal cancer. If I’m dying I would rather not know about it.

Deboning your deer saves cooler space, and makes disposing of trimmings at home easier. So it's convenient and worthwhile in any case.
I believe prion diseases invoke so much fear because they're totally untreatable and rob you of your dignity. Most people have never knowingly eaten brains (who knows what's in potted meat, etc), so giving up eating brains isn't an imposition for them. My dad used to eat squirrel brains, and hog brains scrambled in eggs. If I ever did, I was too young to remember it.

What isn’t a “known cancer risk” in 2023?

Did your cousin also eat squirrel heads?
