The question itself was not very focused- best to ever play? Best playing right now? Most influential?
It’s very true that the “correct” answer is inherently too subjective to actually be correct. But, relative popularity has to be factored into the equation.
Most people would pick someone out of the late 60s/early 70s era. And all those guys were in awe of Jimi. He’s never been my personal favorite but there is no doubt that his techniques have become part of the standard rock guitar vocabulary to this day. His most popular songs don’t really demonstrate his full playing ability. Would have been interesting if he ever had the opportunity to be a guitar player instead of a front man.
I tend to lean his way in these types of conversations, but as you say, the answer is usually to satisfy one’s own musical taste.
