Truth about Defense

James Varney of the T-P lays it on the line about LSU's defensive failings in particular, and the team's failure in general. Basically, he states the facts and names names. I thought LSU quit mentally after the Bama game, and were a disorganized mess before. It's on the front page, but here's the link:

The failures of LSU's defense this season go deeper than Varney points out. LSU's defenders had poor fundamentals all season. LSU's defenders' centers of gravity were about a foot too high. Opposing players constantly got their shoulders below our defenders' shoulders and drove our players back for additional yardage. Instead of tackling with their shoulders and arms it appeared our defenders would attempt to tackle with a chest bump.
We had players who in previous seasons were able to make plays that looked completely inept at times this season. It is difficult to fathom how the level of play could deteriorate so quickly other than from poor coaching and leadership. But the poor coaching went deeper than just poor schemes, all the way to the teaching of individual techniques.
The failures of the defensive schemes are easier for me to forgive than the failures of the individual techniques.

and would turn a 2 or 3 yd play (point of contact) into a 10 or more yd play.

I agree, we've got the talent, no coaching. Poor tech., motivation and effective play calling. The guys always seems confused about the play. I noticed at the Troy game, five or six coaches at a time making all kinds of signals seconds before the snap. Some players were looking at the sideline when the snap occured. Towards the end of the game, all the defensive players were ignoring them, usually with there backs to the sidelines. In the forth quarter they played better on thier own not listening to the idiots on the sidelines. Anybody else notice this?

So why did Les Miles let this part of the coaching slip? This is what really bothers me also. How did he overlook this?

He said it in coachspeak, "We have some problems, we are working on getting it fixed" or something to that effect.
