I think it's a good idea to send thank you notes. If nothing else it lets the person that gave the gift especially at the wedding know you did receive it.

A short thank you is always appreciated.

Think about it, in everyone's own world their time is the most valuable, so when I get note someone has handwritten to me, I look at it as kind of special. I even save them now.
