I have my Daphne Blue MIM 50's style strat. I've chimed in here about upgrading the pickups.

What do you guys think is a noticeable improvement over very serviceable MIM fender PUPS?

The last time I posted a thread about this one of you gentleman pointed me to some Robert Cray Custom Shop PUPS on sale for $220 (i think) and I did not jump.

Price point? Lets say $250. Used is an option.

I found some used Noiseless PUPS that I like as I have tried them before in stores.

Wanted ideas and opinions. Also want opinions if my price point just puts me wasting 200+ bucks to get the same tone.

IB4 FretShack

I think I am about 300 bucks light for his offerings. If he even does loaded guards. If my budget was in his range I would throw business his way. But $250 =/= Custom handwound pickups.

I think you are closer than you realize. I think I remember you saying that you can solder.
What type of rout does your strat have?
I bet Fretshack has some ideas, so don't count him out.
but you can try stratosphere too.

If you want to try something crazy, I have 3 brand new Gretsch lap steel p90 type pickups that need a home
Honestly, these things scream.
I'll give you one of them.

Good Lord

Im looking to stay Stratty. Plus would I need a router or a mallet or both to get those into a Strat?

Thanks for the link though. I know Stratosphere is now an ebay store only and no longer have a website.

I think I am (as of now) between Fender Noiseless or Fender 57/62 pickups.

On a Chinese knock off body? Nope.

Actual Fender body? Yep.

My handwounds on a common material guard populated with complimentary components will run absolutely no less than $400 when it's all said and done, so I'm not an option, sorry.

I was thinking if he just bought a set of pickups and did stuff himself.

That counts. Corona CA or the car ride down to the Mexican plant. Lol

You could paint 2x4s Daphne blue and I’d like them.

Yep. Understood.

High quality mass produced is cheaper than higher quality (TD official luthier) hand produced.

Are officially a luthier? I sense you don’t have the desire to build your own acoustics. Time involved in something that doesn’t move your needle etc.

I have. On a squire.

But we are talking one or two solder joints. Ground wire and output Jack.

My soldering looks like a really small drunk man’s stick welding in a garage.

You type that like it's bad or somethin...
That's a great idea for my next hit song

I have the knowledge and skillset to be a luthier by definition, but I lack some of the tooling and all of the desire to be one. There is simply not enough demand in the market to make it as a true luthier. Those who try are typically starving artists with wood instead of canvasses, and I have zero desire to compromise mine or my family's life and livelihood for that existence.

I chuckle at the term "luthier" because most of the guys whose clients call them that are not luthiers - they are technicians. I tell my clients I simply fix sh!t and solve problems.

That won't work either, a set of my pickups alone exceeds his budget. He'll find a suitable alternative I'm sure.

I've been really impressed with this ceramic Rockfield neck pickup in this Michael Kelly guitar. The bridge pickup aint great though.

The guy who fixed my D35 at Heights Guitar TECH. I should probably not call him a luthier. Lol. He doesn’t try to say he’s something he’s not. It’s right there in the business name.

As always my selections boil down to Clapton items. So I am thinking Fender Noiseless or Lace Sensor (blue/silver/red). Idk what Laces Clapton used in the 1990’s-2000’s.

But I’ve found both in my budget and new or used.

Fret. Been meaning to ask. Anything interesting on the bench lately?

Always interesting stuff on the bench. Today's big fun was conversion of Carondelet artist Brad Davis's backup and open tunings Tele to a Carondelet "Jeffbucker" HH duet, with coil splitting options hidden in a push/pull tone knob.

Brad is the former touring guitarist for Marty Stuart and Billy Bob Thornton, among others. In addition, he’s worked with Earl Scruggs, Warren Zevon, John Jorgenson, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yokum and David Lee Roth, among many other noted and respected names in a studio/session capacity.

And here are a coupla accolades from Guitar World Magazine ...
