I think Crowe could pull off an old sea captain role. They’d have to put him on keto for a few months and trim him up, but he’s still got the acting skills for it. An aging Captain Aubrey after a lifetime at sea would be amazing.
He definitely could play old Jack Aubrey. Bring Paul Bettany back as Maturin. The two of them are still perfect casting. The problem isn't Crowe's age or weight or anything, the problem is, IMO, you can't jump from young Captain Jack to his older self. You have to tell the stories from the books to get to where Jack is in life. Plus there's so much stuff in the book series that the movie wasn't tasked with presenting. Spies, traitors, murder, assassins, shipwrecks, marooning, naval campaigns, sea battles, getting captured, Napoleon, revolutions. You also have to touch on Jack's domestic life, wife, kids, estate, etc. They should do a series. I think you could do it justice in three seasons, about eight or so episodes a season. Crowe can play old Jack in later episodes.

But I think the current Hollywood would ruin it, though. They would have to flood it with forced diversity and girl power, and make the bad guy a symbol of some modern day political evil.
I don't think they would. They didn't ruin Black Sails.

I'd love to see this in the theater.
One of my favorite theatre experiences that I’ve ever had. I’d never heard of the movie but my dad took me to see it when I was twelve in 2003. We both fell in love.
