The 'logical reason' we can't is the rumor/accusation that We recruited a couple of pro football players from the Midwest to play for LSU. They apparently were "recognized" at some point and the accusations began.
Could be all BS but that's the 'logical reason' and that practice wasn't that uncommon in a time when pro players didn't make much money at all.

mikelbr you make money betting on the game and many players are making money, Carlisle is not the only team paying players in 1908.
