Haskell game is where Ty Cobb lost $3000.00 betting on Haskell to win. To say the least he was mad, he had just got back from Japan with his wife (if I remember correct, I do have copies of the articles).
Haskell had years as a legitimate program, but 1908 wasn’t one of those. They went 3-5-1 with 2 of the wins over Drury and St Mary’s (Kansas) and the tie against Creighton. They also lost to Washburn. Their only other win was over a Southern team: Texas A&M. A&M for their part was only 3-5 with 2 of the wins over non-major teams Trinity (TX) and Southwestern (TX). They did beat TCU who was 6-3, but had 4 wins over non-major teams and 2 over Baylor. Baylor played a more legitimate schedule but was only 3-5, including an 89-0 loss to LSU. They beat A&M and TCU (going 1-2 against TCU) along with Tulane (1-1 against them). Tulane was the only team downstream from Haskell with a win against a team outside of Texas or Louisiana with wins over Ole Miss, Miss St and Washington (MO) on the way to 7-1 (before weaseling out of the LSU game.) Ole Miss only beat 3 non-majors (and lost to Rhodes.) Miss St beat only Ole Miss and 2 non-majors (but lost to USL.) Washington (MO) was barely major going 4-0-1 against non-major teams on 0-4 against majors. That’s where things dead end downstream from Haskell. Ty Cobb clearly was judging Haskell based on prior Haskell squads, not the one they fielded in 1908.

Haskell links to the Midwest and Northeastern teams.
I have files on all the teams and links.
