Right, it was an award handed out by Chevrolet, but that was a Loooong time ago, back when the telecast of the game showed the halftime performances of the bands. Must have been the late 1960's. There used to be plaque on Tiger Stadium commemorating it, but I'm not sure if it's still there.
72 or 73. The Chevrolet All-American College TV Band or something very similar to that.

William F. Swor (Marching Band Nick Saban) was Director of Bands back then and was at the top of his profession.

There used to be a big sign over the Tiger Stadium entrance gate we entered that read "Through this gate passes the All-American Golden Band from Tiger Land."

It's probably still there, but I don't know for sure.

BTW, I would really like to see a Southeastern Conference Marching Band Contest at the end of football season with the same D.C.I. (Drum Corps International) Judges using the exact same Caption Scoring Adjudication process that is used in all D.C.I. shows. That's the only way to know how the SEC Bands really rank.....

Not what the thread was originally about but since mentioned - The only National Championship for college marching bands:

Chevrolet (GM) sponsored the competition during the 1970 season, with the winner to perform at the halftime of the East-West Shrine Game in Oakland, CA on January 2. LSU played in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day evening (January 1). A few hours later the band packed up and took a chartered flight across country from Miami to SF. Arriving at the E-W game by noon kickoff, the band then performed a completely different nationally-televised halftime show, within 24 hours on opposite edges of the continent. The broadcast is on YouTube with the performance beginning at 3:00 mark. The opening Fight/March of American hymns is a classic drill.
