I built something similar for the inlaws about 2 years ago, just not all the way to the ceiling, so easier to deal with molding. Just cabinet grade plywood right now is probably 500 or more for a job that size. So if I'm trying to make money for my time, it's gonna be a few thousand for a job like that. $4,400 seems a little high, but everything seems high nowadays. $8000+ is outrageous.
As far as adding room, my parents just bought an older 2,000 sq ft house and totally re-did the whole thing. New roof, total kitchen remodel, Custom shower, flooring, complete paint job, etc. for ~$130k.
