I did the exact same thing for years. I went to a sleep clinic and here is the basic program:
Don’t go to bed until you are sleepy (11 pm with 6 am alarm).
Don’t watch tv or use your computer/phone for a couple of hours before bedtime.
I will use one AirPod at low volume to listen to a podcast that has a monotone speaker on a subject that is interesting enough to focus my mind, but not full of loud noises like laughing or animal screeching. I often listen to a Lewis and Clarke audio book by William R Lighton for free on the podcast app.
Don’t take afternoon naps.
It will take some time, but I don’t have a problem with insomnia anymore.
Best of luck.
