Our child has graduated, gotten a job and is getting her own vehicle insurance. The SF agent told her that if she lists me as a driver on her policy, that it may be "a good bit" cheaper.

My question: What is the risk that I am taking??? Husband and I own our business and have quite the investment accounts. What's my exposure should the worst ever happen and she causes an accident and people are gravely injured?

The car is registered in her name if that makes a difference in anyone's answer.

It seems like that insurance agent is manipulating the way the policy is priced by listing an older driver, opposed to the proper driver who’s in their early 20’s, simply to be more price competitive. It’s a lie, so don’t participate and look for an insurance agent who is honest with you and the company they represent.

As far as affecting your liability exposure, unless you are on the vehicle title, or are driving at the time of an accident, you should have no exposure risk.

Thanks ... the agent she spoke with at SF and also Farm Bureau both asked her about that/gave her that option to ask us.

Where does the child live?

If with you, then you probably should be listed as a driver or excluded as a driver.

If listing you as a driver saves money, go for it.

You don't own the vehicle.
You shouldn't have any liability exposure unless you are behind the wheel.

If her car is tagged in a different state than you, then you shouldn't be a driver on her policy.

There isn't any downside risk to you for doing so.
But the agent is fudging the underwriting. That is the opposite of their job.

I wouldn’t see any risk to you, but I would absolutely say there is risk to her to get a coverage issue if she ever had a major issue. She is essentially lying to get a lower rate. I’m not in insurance but an audit like in the case of a major claim could absolutely find an issue with that. If she was under your same roof in the same state, that’s one thing.
