How many 5 stars could we have gotten with the 18mil we gave CEO to retire in Destin?

Like it or not, the same deep pockets that ponied up that 18 million on a seconds notice are the same deep pockets we need to land some of these high profile recruits.
I don’t care how wealthy you are, there’s only so much money a limited number of individuals are going to shell out within 5 years for LSU football.
Ed O’s buyout would have been a nice war chest to start the NIL era with.
When kids like Collin Simmons have LSU in their top 3 with home state Texas and destination city Miami, he obviously liked it at LSU and would love to play ball here. (Baton Rouge isn’t exactly Austin or Coral Gables)
But if he can make an extra 6 figures up front to stay close to home at UT and still play in the SEC, he would be stupid not to take it.
We have got to outbid the Texas schools on select top recruits that truly have interest in playing for LSU. Not full blown a$m, but if we need to drop 6 or 7 figures to land a stud 5 star, we need to do it if we don’t want to fall behind in recruiting.

how much have you donated?

I don’t discuss financials that’s not the point of my post.
But for instance, if the next Dline coach has a 1.8 million dollar buyout with his current contract, where do you think that extra money (on top of the contract price with LSU) comes from?
It doesn’t appear out of thin air and LSU is not the US Treasury they don’t print money. Someone is paying the bill and it’s not season ticket donations.
Big money is spent that isn’t part of the bottom line of TAF or LSU athletics.

Your 5 star players make false starts in last seconds

Our 5 star DT hasn’t made a play all season

Coming off that injury isn’t a fair comparison

If you don’t pay the 18 million, then you don’t have a new DC to spend it on.
Catch 22.

Only reason Smith was a 5 star is because he was 6’4 315 at 16 years old running a 4.6 shuttle. He moved at 315 like other DT playing at 275.
He is nowhere near that quick since the injury.

That’s on Woodward who gave an extension with a massive buyout to a coach which no other team was coming after. Coach O earned a contract extension but Woodward has tied up millions in buyouts unnecessarily. He gets the credit for Johnson and Mulkey, but this embarrassing debacle is on him.

LSU definitely overpaid on EO's contract but at the point where he was fired there was no option of not paying. You can't send him off angry with the NCAA already snooping around and more importantly every potential hire is watching how you treat the outgoing guy. Incoming guy doesn't hate outgoing guy like the fans do.

It was his second year at LSU and we were coming off of the best season in college football history. The team improved every year under O until 2020.
He was the 5th highest paid coach in the SEC at the time at 6mil a year. Nobody would have predicted the collapse in just 2 years into a 6 year contract. He was paid less than Gus M at Auburn.
His contract was very reasonable for 6 years, it locked us in with a NC coach into 2025 at 6mil a year (look what coaches are getting now)
Having to fire him just 2 years into the contract is what made the buyout so high. Is what it is

If this is how college football is gonna be, if rather have a budget HC and spend more on players.
Sunbelt Billy would have cost less than half of what we will be paying Kelly for 8 more years
