I thought Georgetown was an all black school growing up. No whites on team or coaches for that matter.

Thompson was succeeded as head coach by a guy he recruited to Georgetown who then spent 20 years as his assistant

Many people thought the same thing. Which is crazy considering that could not be any further from the truth.
But no, Deion is not similar. Thompson won and won big at Georgetown. Deion has beaten TCU, and two below average teams. Basically, John Thompson was to basketball what Howard Schnellenberger was to football. Both became coaches at (relatively) small private universities in large cities who had little history of success. However, both realized that there were a ton of great players within those inner cities. All they had to do is convince the school to allow them to enroll to play sports when they otherwise would have NEVER been admitted to those colleges.
