Midwestern fattery is real. I think the south only has a slight advantage because it's not as cold and depressing as Cincinnati, Cleveland, or Indianapolis in January, for instance. And those are the big cities. Podunk-ville trashniness and obesity shocked my ex-wife when we visited my grandparents.
My friend from a plains state told me everyone was "wintered in" because the only things there were to do was practice procreation and eat.
