LSU completed its first upper deck in 1978. Like the upper decks of today, the seats were way too far from the field and removed from the game atmosphere, but they were cheap, no TAF donation, and it was possible to arrive an hour before kickoff, find a parking spot on campus (for free), and be on the interstate 30 minutes after the game ended. If you lived in SE Louisiana, a LSU football game was a 1/2 day excursion at most. It was routine to leave St. Tammany parish around 4pm, find a random parking spot on campus, and be in bed by 11pm. In addition, there was little TV, so most kickoffs were at 7pm. The difference between an ESPN 6pm kickoff and a 7pm kickoff is a full 1/3 of a game baking in the Sun.

I remember when standard kickoff was 7:30pm. I think they went to 7 pm so the east coast newspapers could print results in the Sunday papers??
