Away game : You want the ball to take the crowd out of the game if you score and make the home team come from behind.
Home Game: You defer and put your defense on the field at home with the home crowd and hope for a TD or FG with a mistake and get ahead early at home.
I played college football and this is the strategy 90% of the time.
