Air travel is, all things considered, very inexpensive. If behavior wouldn’t surprise me in a shopping mall, it doesn’t surprise me in an airport. I don’t like it, but it’s a fairly obvious outcome once society embraced the “I don’t care what anyone thinks; I’m going to be comfortable” mindset.

Here’s the thing though. It’s not meaningfully less comfortable to wear reasonable looking clothes, sneakers, etc. rather than flip flops and PJs. They make good looking, comfortably casual options now and people still opt to be the lowest common denominator in growing numbers.

This is the issue, Airline travel is too cheap, and too many po's have too much disposable income. In the 80s mostly business travel and rich folks flew, now the lowest class does.
