Even the most ardent Daniels supporters don’t dispute that Nuss is a better passer of the football. That’s obvious. But the better thrower doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the best QB for this team. I think a lot of people underestimate just how special Daniels is a runner. He’s not just a regular dual threat, he is an amazing runner.

So Kelly and co. believe that the gap between Daniels legs and Nuss’s legs plus the gap between Daniels protecting of the football—granted, too much some times—and Nuss’s not protecting the football are more conducive to this particular LSU football team winning than the gap between Nuss’s better passing than Daniels’. They may be wrong, but the logic makes sense.

I think Nuss’s value would be higher if we have an OL that can both pass pro and run block better. There may become a time when the OL comes together and gives great pockets so Nuss is less likely to be on the run and throw it up and put the ball in harm’s way. And they run block well enough that we get the running game going and Nuss can take advantage of that will play action.

Also, one of Daniels’ strengths may also be a weakness. He is so calm and even keeled, never too high or too low. Nuss has a lot more fire, which we may need of the defense continues to struggle. I think Daniels is currently the best option. But I’m not sure he can lead us back if we get down by a couple of scores. He’s a front runner. Which is perfect as long as we’re winning. But if the defense keeps struggling, and we wind up in shootouts, Nuss may wind up being the better option. But it’s more than just who throws the better ball. The OL’s pass pro matters. The OL’s run blocking matters. The RB’s in pass pro matters. There’s just a lot of variables. There’s a world where Nuss is the better QB for this team. But it’s a lot more complicated than who throws the better ball.

Hey, look! Someone else gets it. Maybe BK thinks JD is the better option because or RBs have previously been pretty “meh” and he actually gave us somewhat of a running game. Yes, throwing deep does “open up the chance for running” a little more, but if your Oline is not great at run blocking and your RBs are still not great, your running game is still easily defendable even if you back off the secondary. Diggs may change that for us and if he does, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Nuss come in occasionally from time to time during games.

Like was said above, none of us who are fine with JD starting are going to try to argue he is the better “passer”. He isn’t. Nuss has got a hell of an arm and if can or has learned not to try to force a play when it’s not there and end up throwing an interception, he could be a really good QB for us. But if we have a terrible running game to go with it, teams will just do the opposite of what they do with JD and we will be no better off. It’s obvious that our WRs (while good) are not at the same level as they’ve been in the past when it comes to making plays happen.

I think people, the coaches included, overestimate his running ability's impact on games. When I think of amazing runners, I think of Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, etc. Those guys could all take over games and frequently generate explosive plays. Whether it's Daniels himself or the system he's in, we haven't seen that.
