As an inner city cop with two decades on the job, there are few things more insulting and uninspiring than having to answer to bureaucratic outside appointed law enforcement administrators.

Inner city policing is a tough job that takes years to fully understand all of the factors that contribute to rising crime. More importantly, it requires support from leadership to be able to effectively do the work that is necessary in order to curb violence and maintain law and order.

Bringing in an outside candidate with minimal front line experience is a recipe to create a chilling effect. Simply put, cops know they get paid the same if they show up and do the minimum.

Choosing a leader that is respected and proven matters. No one cares how inclusive or morally righteous the Mayor’s selection is when they have to live in constant fear of violence.

Agreed.

Does the NOPD currently possess one of those?

the nopd is just a big money laundering operation like the entire cantrell administration. hiring kirkpatrick is actually less of a joke than hiring some clown in the nopd.

i think whoever the people are who put cantrell in office to sell the city out are looking to start turning a profit, so they at least need a somewhat adequate police force instead of the full blown joke that the nopd is.
