There's a lot of revisionist history around that band. When Freddie Mercury died, the big media talking point was "Reagan won't talk about AIDS." So, when Mercury died, they suddenly turned Queen into this beloved, venerated cultural icon, and they just had never been that. People had moved on and Queen was pretty widely seen a cheesy, outdated, and irrelevant relic of the 1970s... until Mercury died at the perfect time for the 49 percent of the population who are drooling idiots to use him to make a point against Reagan.
