You can plug that in while it's under warranty. Just unplug it when you take the truck in for oil changes and what not.
It doesn't reprogram anything. It just sends a signal to the engine that the hood was opened, which for some reason tells the engine to not run on 4 cylinders.

I have 150K miles on a 2017 Sierra Denali. I have had zero issues with the truck. GM did recall and flushed the transmission when it had about 50k miles, maybe 2019. It is a great looking truck. Gave it to my son. Drive a 2023 now.
