I grew up in Livingston Parish, moved to Houston and was able to shake it, but anytime I go back to visit I pick it back up for awhile. It’s a virus.
I’m very proud of my Southern accent and can’t understand why anyone would want to lose theirs. A southern accent is far more pleasant to the ears than any of the various yankee accents. And, as experience has shown me over my travels around the country and globe, females love the Southern accent, especially when coupled with Southern manners.
I do think though with each passing generation the old Southern accent is slowly dying off. Thankfully I was raised by my grandmother and surrounded by great-aunts and uncles who grew up in the early 20th century and still had that old Southern accent. So they were the ones who passed it to me.

Southern accents carry the stereotype of sounding more uneducated than flat accents. People in the Midwest and northeast view Southern states (except Florida) as a bunch of dumb uneducated hicks who never went to college and work service industry jobs. That’s the stereotype northerners have when they hear southern accents.
No offense but statistics prove there’s truth to that stereotype. The south has always been the poorest region of the country and its been that way for 50+ years. People on here don’t like to hear that because they have a vendetta against the culture of Northeastern and West Coast people (forget the politics)

You should be proud of it. It represents where you are from and that should be special to anyone.
I felt a lot different about it in the late 90s than I do now. Also, it was a personal challenge for me to lose the southern accent and obtain the ability to speak with a more generic one, and I was able to accomplish that so that was a big win for me.
