The, "People were tougher back in the old days and people these days are just weak and spoiled by air conditioning." line that people love is a fallacy. Heatwaves then were more deadly, particularly in the slums of cities.

No it’s not. People were way tougher back then. We become softer with every generation. When my grandad grew up, in the 1920’s, there was an expectation that every boy was going to work at hard labor and carry cold steel into battle. Every woman was going to risk death in multiple childbirths. All of that is gone.
