Well, mathematically your mom is correct. It is a very small number of priests. It doesn't mean I excuse it or condone the abuse but it is not as widely spread as the media would like people to think.
Would you be surprised to know that the abuse is less prevalent in the Catholic church than in the protestant churches? Would you be surprised to learn sexual abuse is more prevalent in public schools?
The way the abuse was handled by church leadership is a serious problem as is the abuse, but let's not pretend it is a blight solely done by Catholic priests.
