This has been the bigger issue this summer, the drought conditions in large portions of the country.
Usually afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer. Even if it does not rain in your exact location that day, there are storms close enough to generate some cloud cover in the afternoon, thus knocking temperatures down a bit every late afternoon.
Without that this year there is nothing to check temperatures rising throughout the entire daylight period. Thus “near record highs” almost every day.
