My dad used to wake me up to dove hunt at about 4 years old. I hated it. I had to go because the governor of Florida was hunting our farm. What I wouldn’t give today for how good those hunts were. About the same age I remember fishing with my Paw Paw for bream. His buddy in the boat with us hooked him. I thought it was hilarious. That was probably the closest Paw Paw came to cursing in his life.

I also just moved back home and joined a dog hunting club my grandfather helped found. My family owns the camp and the club leases the land around it. The first dead deer I ever saw was there. My Grandad never hunted but he didn’t miss lunch on Saturday. He would make his rounds. He’d start at my house. He’d lay on the horn until I came out. We’d then go down the line until 5 more cousins were in his white Chevy caprice armed to the teeth with BB guns. To this day the fried venison is the the exact same as it was when I was 5 years old. There is never fried chicken. We eat deer meat every Saturday at 12 and put honey on the biscuits just like I did 35 years ago. I’m super pumped to introduce my 5 year old and his little brother to this place. Damn. Y’all got me all nostalgic.
